Wallpaper with Flowers
Project type
Painting
Date
2024
This piece evokes The Yellow Wallpaper (a story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman) through its absence of true yellow. The wallpaper stripes consist of complementary blue and shades of green and orange dependent on a yellow hue. The flowers, created of dried acrylic paint, mimic the desire to escape the tw-dimensionality of the wall's surface.
I was introduced to The Yellow Wallpaper through a choreographed dance based on the story. My daughter had the privilege of performing in this work, opening our understanding of what horror can mean when women lose their agency.
